As a native son of Ohio, I must comment on the passing of John Glenn. A truly great American.
John Glenn Jr. (July 18, 1921 – December 8, 2016) was an American aviator, engineer, astronaut, and United States Senator from Ohio. In 1962 he became the first American to orbit the earth, circling three times. Before joining NASA, he was a distinguished fighter pilot in both World War II and Korea, with five Distinguished Flying Crosses and eighteen clusters. He went into space and orbited the earth in a very experimental and risky spacecraft. He realized the importance of this flight for our nation and accepted the challenge. And then at an advanced age he went into space again because of his true love of space exploration. He served his nation and Ohio as a US Senator. Always putting Ohio and the nation first. Godspeed John Glenn and we will miss you.
